children’s woodwork

Come experience the pleasure of working wood without electric blades. Work with the grain, understand how things have been done for a long time, and appreciate that, outside of a production setting, handtool work can be just as efficient as machine work, without all the dust and noise.

The Children’s and Youth woodworking program is for sessions of 3.5 hours each. Come and learn how to safely use hand tools to cut, drill, saw, bend, nail, plane and chisel wood. All classes are supervised by adults with experience. Wood is provided and packages of extra wood are available for taking home.

The focus of first sessions focus on tool safety, a group safety pledge and safe behaviour training to work as a cooperative group. There is an introduction to sawing boards and nailing wood, make a step stool in which there is drilling holes, hammering nails and using handtools to sharp the wood.

During all classes there is a focus on safety. These classes use handtools such as the handsaw, coping saw, file, key hole saw, rasp, hammer, ruler, a bench hook and a mitre box to make a step stool, tray and a cutting board.
