Hardwood Bench

One of our most popular classes, it takes students into the next steps for successful woodworking. This once-a-week class spanning 6 sessions emphasizes preparing wood, measuring properly, cutting accurately, making joinery, and using core techniques in a consistent manner with modern tools. 

MATERIALS: 2x6 red alder or similar woods

TOOLS: jointer, planer, hand planes, chop-saw, table-saw, Festool Domino, router table, bandsaw

ACTIVITIES: Prep wood, glue up/lamination, angled cutting, smooth surfaces and use Domino machine

LEVEL: Basic Skills

PREREQUISITES: None (but will be easier if a beginner class was previously taken)

EXERCISE: Learn to use floating-tenon joints for making a small sitting bench or plant shelf

DURATION: 21 hours (6 sessions)

  • Build a small bench or table shelf with the shape and design you want

  • Focusing on the safe use of woodworking machines, and layout techniques

  • Learn important steps and practices for building good habits and avoiding mistakes

  • You and a new group of friends will learn various ways to cut and shape wood

  • Use mortise and tenon joinery called floating tenons with a Festool Domino machine

  • Use of shellac for finishing wood
