This class is about technique and skill-based practice and making joinery samples that you will use as a reference for future projects. Learn to select joints, lay them out, and cut them accurately using various Western and Eastern hand tools rather than machine-based methods. Along with learning about and making a wide variety of joints, you will also improve your layout skills, enhance your measuring and accuracy, and better understand joint selection and wood behaviour.
In this 6-night class, you’ll learn and practice joint-making techniques, including:
- Sharpening your chisels and hand planes 
- Hand planing lumber 
- Selection and layout of joints with measuring & marking tools 
- Hand-cutting half lap or bridle joints 
- Hand-cutting finger joints 
- Mortise and tenons 
- Approaches to cabinet, frame, table, and chair joinery 
- How to recover from joinery mistakes 
MATERIALS: Various hard woods
PREREQUISITES: None, but having previous woodworking experience helps
TOOLS: Hand planes, chisels, handsaws, router plane, rabbet plane, and bandsaw
EXERCISE: several joinery exercises including a framed casework panel
DURATION: 21 hours ( for the 5 Saturday sessions 12:00 - 4:00 pm)
