    Tip for Roughing

    Stabilize your spindle turning focus with quick hand movements and well balanced leg and foot positions. As you push the roughing tool along the working edge ensure you maintain a uniform placement on the tool rest. Practicing quick and smooth turning of a basic spindle is the first skill to learn for producing smooth and uniform surfaces.

    10 Minute Smoothing

    Smooth planing requires a fine setting to the blade. Once achieved the wood produces a satisfying sound that you learn to hear. Stability of the wood piece is necessary to allow the cutting blade to the surface with very thin shavings.

    Short Spindle Routine

    Position all spindles slightly in there sockets and then gently use the mallet to seat them. Gradually increasing the depth of insertion but check for the height separation between the seat deck and the arm rests.

    Morning Sharpening

    Prepping a chisel back to be flat before honing the edge. Use any flat cutting surface diamond plate is ideal and quick, but sand paper on glass works as does large 800 grit waterstone.

    Finger Bushing for Drilling

    Use of the fingers to hold the drill center in the arm rest holes while drilling the seat deck. These spindle holes must be aligned at the correct angle and depth. Note the scrape wood used to back the arm rest hole has been splinttered out.

    Stretcher Holes

    Marking the position of the stretcher holes is easily done with height blocks. These blocks are also used to hold the drill shaft when drilling the sockets. Note how the flat facets on the legs are aligned with each other as she marks the hole position with the pointy stick..
